Mum admits changing six-year-old son's 'outdoorsy' name because it didn't suit him

By Merryn Porter |

W?e all know how hard it is to come up with a baby name that suits our offspring.

In fact, the whole concept of naming a child before or soon after we meet them does seem odd.

So spare a thought for a US mum who came up with an unusual and "outdoorsy" name for her son, only to discover it didn't suit his personality at all.

Jen Hamilton recently posted a TikTok video to her account in response to the question, "Parents, do you ever regret what you named kid?"

"Not only did I regret it, we just changed his name when he was 18 months old," replied Hamilton in the video, which has since gone viral, racking up more than 6.2 million views.

"So here's the story," she continued. "When I was pregnant with my second, I thought, 'Wow, my eldest son, outdoorsy boy. My husband, outdoorsy boy. Surely this child will have the soul of like a river-rafting tour guide.'

"So when we were looking for a name, I went onto Pinterest and I typed in 'Outdoorsy boy baby names' and we settled on the name 'Aspen' ?[and were like] 'That's a super cool name.

"And it's a super cool name... for someone else."

Hamilton went on to list the reasons why the name didn't suit her son, saying he gets car sick in the drive-through at fast food restaurants; he gags at the thought of eating a blueberry, and he "lost his mind" at his first birthday party "when his toe touched his cake." ?

She went on to say he loves air-conditioning and sitting down, and at six years old, "loves being held by his mum, still, constantly".

And instead of having a blanket or stuffed toy to comfort him, he has a "comfort mole" on his mother's neck which he likes to touch.

"But he is just a little light, he's just the sweetest little boy," Hamilton continued, becoming emotional, "So we chose a name that means 'light', which is 'Luke'.

"And he may never guide river-rafting tours, but he will for sure be in a very comfortable location being just as sweet as he can be, and I love him so much."

The video has so far has received 757,000 likes and thousands of comments.

"He looks so much more like a 'Luke' than an 'Aspen'," wrote one, "Sweet boy."?

"My mother [said] 'Sometime you have to wait till after they're born and look them in the eye and ask 'Who are you?'"

?Another joked, "My name is Luke and I love the outdoors. Changing my name to 'Aspen' ASAP."
