When you have children, holidays just aren't the same as they used to be. Whether you go away somewhere or stay home, holidays ¨C especially that long summertime one ¨C can actually seem like hard work.
While some people like the relaxed pace of being home with young kids without the routine of school, others find it difficult to fill in the days, especially when parents have to work.
Now, just days after announcing he and wife Blake Lively are expanding their family again, Ryan Reynolds has given a rare insight into life at home with three young children, and it appears the genetically-blessed pair are a fan of staying home over summer.
Reynolds, 45, was appearing on the popular US talk show Live! With Kelly and Ryan? when he was asked how he spent the US summer holidays.
"My summer was quite nice actually," he said. "I wouldn't say it was time off but structured time off. I'd make sure I worked a few hours in the morning and then I would be off.
"But it was beautiful. It was great."
Reynolds also revealed he "stayed home the whole summer" with Blakely and their three daughters, James, Inez and Betty.
"I haven't shot a movie in a year. Starting one right now, which is nice, but it was just nice to be at home with my family," he said.
"Summertimes at home are pretty special."
Reynolds admitted that while life at home with three daughters aged seven, five, and three "is pretty wild," their young ages meant "they're still sweet."
Asked if the three-year-old has tantrums, he said, "They all have [tantrums]. I have most of the tantrums.
"But they have a ball. I can easily say this is the best summer we have ever had as a family. It has just been so nice to be home and to be present."
He also offered an insight into how they spent their time at home.
"The kids do the same stuff every other kid does. They are drawing and colouring. They are doing their dance parties. They hunt mum and dad in the woods with a crossbow ...
"It's that time of your life, you know it just reminds me of that when I was a little kid and everything was just so easy."
?Lively revealed her fourth pregnancy by debuting her baby bump on the red carpet at the 10th Annual Forbes Power Women's Summit in New York on September 15.
It was the second time Lively, 35, had used a red carpet event to reveal she was expecting. In 2019, her pregnancy with their third child came to light when she attended the movie premiere of Reynolds' movie, Pok¨¦mon: Detective Pikachu, also in New York.
Reynolds announced eight months ago he was taking a "sabbatical" from acting to focus on his family and his creative agency Maximum Effort, and to "live life like a normal human".
"I want my kids to have a pretty normal schedule," he said at the time. "For many years, when my wife Blake would shoot a film, I would not shoot a film and I would be with the kids and vice versa. So we would sort of trade-off. We never really worked at the same time. But always we were away. So the kids were away too."
He said that changed after their eldest children started school.
"Now that they're in school, they have a somewhat normal schedule. I think it's totally important for their development and I really enjoy being a present dad," he said.
"I love taking them to school in the morning, I love picking them up ˇ I don't want to miss this time with my kids."
It is not surprising the pair decided to add to their brood, with Lively telling People in 2016, "I'm one of five kids. My husband is one of four, so we're officially breeders. in 2016. "All my eggs are in one basket, and that's my family. That's where my heart is."
