'I gasped': Grandma slammed for 'cruel' act with 10-week-old baby

By Naomi White|

There are some 'firsts' that should never be taken away from parents: first roll, first solids, first steps... these hard-earned milestones are bright spots in the chaos of a bub's first year.

One mum is fuming after discovering her mother-in-law had taken it upon herself to feed her daughter her first food - ice cream, at 10-weeks-old.

Posting the saga to Reddit, the mum explained she and her ?mother-in-law had never got along well. While they usually stay cordial, since having her baby her mother-in-law's criticism had increased.

"I am so aggravated and upset," she began her post titled 'My mother-in-law fed my 10-week-old ice cream'.

When she was pregnant, her mother-in-law had even referred to her as 'just the incubator'. Even her husband's maternal grandmother had told her to be nicer.

And had some unusual bonding activities planned for when her granddaughter arrived.?

"She has been itching to give my baby ice cream or frosting from before I even gave birth. I have noooo idea why. Both my husband and I said no multiple times," the mum explained.

"Yesterday she turned her back to me and gave my two-month-old ice cream. I'm assuming it was just the finger tip full of ice cream. I know this was true because later on she told my husband she did it."

Not only did this enrage the new mum, it left her baby with an upset stomach and a nappy rash from the ensuing reaction. ?

While her baby wasn't endangered by the antics, she still couldn't get past it.

"I can't forgive my mother-in-law. She knew it was wrong or she wouldn't have hid. We have repeatedly said no. She's still too young, we were worried about allergies, and we want to be there for fun stuff like that (when she's old enough)," she shared.

Asking if she'd be taking things too far to cut contact for a while, ?those on Reddit had the mum's back, saying if anything she was underreacting.

"This got me so heated. This is foul behavior from your mother-in-law," said one person.

"[She] should never be left alone with your kid. Seriously. She has shown herself to be unfit," agreed another.

"Definitely put your mother-in-law in time out," said a third.

"I gasped at this title! Never let her alone with your baby," commented a fourth. "If it were me, she'd be cut off permanently."

Others questioned how a grandmother could risk making their grandchild sick to prove a point.?

"A 10-week-old can't even have water - what the eff was she thinking? This would be my hill I'd happily die on. The rage I've got for you!" said one mum.

"That seems like a cruel thing to do to little one's digestive track," said another, while another bluntly said: "She... made your 10-week-old-baby sick."

In an update the mum thanked those who responded, saying she was overwhelmed.

"I knew I would get some responses but I'm truly blown away with the amount. I'm even more blown away that you all believe I am not over-reacting," she said. "It makes me feel so validated.

"In-law relationships can be so tricky but I truly feel they need a 'time out'."
