The truth about whether cats can see in the dark: Dr Katrina Warren answers FAQs about cats

By Katrina Warren|

Dr Katrina Warren answers some common questions from cat owners.

Can cats see in the dark??

Contrary to popular belief, cats are not nocturnal; they are crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dusk and dawn. Their eyes adapt to dim environments and see well in low-light conditions.?

If you look at your cat's pupils, they constrict in daylight and enlarge at night. These large pupils allow more light into their eyes, which helps them see in the dark.

Cats can't see in absolute darkness, but most homes have some light somewhere at night time, enabling your cat to see at night.?

What does it mean when your cat kneads you?

If you live with a cat who loves to knead, you'll recognise the resemblance to the rhythmic motion of kneading dough. This adorable behaviour typically occurs when a cat is in a state of relaxation, and they might choose to knead on people or soft surfaces like a cosy blanket or your favourite jumper.

Not all cats engage in this behaviour, some may do it only occasionally.

It's thought that kneading can be traced back to a kitten's earliest days. As tiny bundles of fur, kittens instinctively knead their mother's abdomen to stimulate milk flow. This repetitive motion establishes a comforting association with kneading that often persists into adulthood.

When your feline companion kneads you, it's a sign they are in a state of pure contentment and happiness.

However, some cats may extend their claws while kneading, which can hurt; keeping your cat's nails trimmed ensures that the kneading experience remains enjoyable for you and your feline friend.

Why does my cat prefer to drink from a running tap?

Some cats prefer running water and may opt for it over a traditional water bowl. There are a few theories why.?

Firstly, running water is likely perceived as clean and fresh and may taste better. In contrast, stagnant water may carry a higher risk of bacterial contamination. Plus, the continuous flow of water helps to oxygenate it, enhancing the taste and freshness.

Another reason cats may prefer running water is that it tends to be cooler than still water. Cats are sensitive to temperature, and cooler water may be more refreshing, especially during hot weather.?

Additionally, some cats dislike the sensation of their whiskers touching the sides of a narrow water bowl or the water's surface while drinking.

Many cats don't consume adequate water, especially if their diet primarily consists of dry kibble. Providing your feline companion with a drinking fountain can be highly beneficial to address this issue and promote proper hydration. The circulating water mimics the allure of running water but also encourages cats to drink more frequently.

If you observe any significant changes in your cat's water intake or behaviour, consult your veterinarian to rule out any underlying health concerns.
