Happy ending for 'depressed' shelter cat Fishtopher who melted hearts on Twitter

A 'depressed' cat by the name of Fishtopher has been adopted after he gained notoriety from an adorable image of him circulated on Twitter.

In a post first shared by Twitter user Molly Clarke, ?Fishtopher is described as "not a fish out of water, but he is out of sorts at the shelter" in the listing posted to PetFinder.com by Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center, Inc. in New Jersey, USA.

In the provided pictures, the cat, who is a male domestic shorthair and Bengal mix, looks anxiously up at the camera, with a gaze that almost looks human.?

"He is very sad and depressed and will only eat when he has company... He wouldn't even look up for pictures, but did enjoy his one on one attention, and getting chin rubs," continued the description.

"I swear to god. if one of you doesn't go get fishtopherˇ­" wrote Clarke on Twitter, spurring a number of people to post about the cat.

"i live for fishtopher. i would die for fishtopher. i have never seen a more perfect being than fishtopher," wrote another.

"How are cats with weird names and depressive disorders going to get instantly adopted without Twitter," one commenter pondered.

Even celebrities chimed in from overseas, with UK comedian Mitch Benn writing, "SOMEBODY IN NEW JERSEY PLEASE ADOPT THE SADDEST LOOKING CAT IN THE WORLD."

"Fishtopher is in New Jersey and I will fight you all if he doesn't have a home by Monday," said another.

The viral post helped garner attention towards the chubby kitty, according to the shelter he was held at.

"We have had quite a number of people interested in adopting him, which we are so excited about!" Homeward Bound Adoption Centre told HuffPost on Friday, "We are doing meets with him tomorrow because of his popularity."

For those curious about Fishtopher's name, the spokesperson from the shelter only mentioned that the adoption centre staff gives the cats names at "random."?
