How dogs bark and cats meow in Australia compared to the world

At some point, everyone wishes they could talk to their pets.

It would be nice to know what your cat's saying when they're howling and doing zoomies around the house at 3am, or what your dog is saying when 'chatting' to their pooch friends at the park.

?Unless you're Dr Dolittle, it's unlikely you'll be hearing the latest gossip from your pet anytime soon.

However, most of the time, pet owners interpret different sounds and noises from their fur babies จC for example, a 'meow' from a cat or a 'woof' from a dog.

The thing is, in different countries across the globe, us humans interpret these sounds differently.

The team at WordTips trawled through articles and language resources to find out how dogs bark and cats meow in different countries around the world, including Australia.

By looking at the most spoken language across 147 countries, ?it was found dogs and cats' sounds are pronounced differently depending on the location.

The key findings from the report was that there are 40 interpretations of a dog's bark.

In 13 countries including ?Australia, England, Canada and the USA a dog's bark is pronounced woof, woof.

In ?countries like Brazil, Portugal, Angola and Mozambique, it's pronounced au, au.

Looking at countries in Northern Europe, there are ?variations starting with the letter v.

For example, in Iceland and Norway, it's voff, voff. In Sweden it's vov,vov and then Finland they say vuh,vuh.

Jumping over to Asia, ?there's a variety of different ways of saying woof, woof. In ?China it's gaf, gaf and in Japan it's wan-wan.

When it comes to cats, ?here in Australia we say meow and England, the USA, Canada and ?some countries in Africa say the same.

Many countries have something very similar.

People in Nepal say myaoo while in China, they say miao, similar to Taiwan where they say Miจกo with the macron over the letter a.

In Cambodia, in Khmer, it's Naav-Naav. ?

At the end of the day pet owners interpret their pets and somehow they understand each other, and that's all that matters. ?
