A promotion is the ultimate testament to a job well done. More than just a new title, it's recognition of your hard work and achievements, and an opportunity to build on your confidence with increased responsibility.

But getting that sought-after tick of approval from your boss can be a work in progress. Here, we've compiled a list of five strategies to help you boost your chances of reaching that next rung on the ladder!

1. Over-achieve

If you want to show your boss you're ready for the next step, you've got to do more than just get the job done.
Demonstrate your commitment to your company by going the extra mile on every task and every project กช nothing says you're ready for greater responsibility than taking it on independently!

2. Work well with others

Remember that old saying, "There's no 'I' in team"? Well, it rings true in this case. "Without a doubt, the number one soft skill sought by employers is the ability to work well with others," says Craig Lethem, director of recruitment firm Luminoso. "Workplaces are increasingly fluid and dynamic, and people who can thrive and adapt to work with all manner of [people] will always be in demand.กฑ

3. Acquire new knowledge

Look for learning opportunities within the office กช internal training initiatives or teaming up with a mentor, for example กช as well as outside the office. Conferences and online courses are also a great way to grow your skills and gain renewed confidence in your capabilities.

4. Learn to problem solve

Problem solving is a part of everyday life, whether in our personal life or at work, so the more evolved your skills are in this area, the more youกฏll stand out in a crowd.

"Donกฏt just go to your manager with a problem กช go with a few possible solutions," advises Carolyn Alchin, Vice President of the Career Development Association of Australia (CDAA).

5. Communicate clearly and early

Being able to communicate effectively กช in writing and in person กช will set you apart from your peers and it can save time, money and angst at work. Communicating early, before a problem gets out of hand, is also important.

If a project isn't going to plan, let colleagues or your boss know as early as possible. This will not only help you and your team address the issue, it will also single you out as a reliable and honest team member.
