I Woke Up Like This: What Rachael Finch does each morning before her kids wake up

By 9Honey|

In 9Honey's 'I Woke Up Like This' series, we remove the filters from everyday life and bares all for a much-needed reality check.

We will be speaking to a range of people กช from faces you know to faces you will want to know กช to tear away the fa?ade of make-up and social media and bring things back to basics with realistic 'I woke up like this' selfies and morning routines.

Today, we're 'waking up' with the one and only Rachael Finch.

What time do you wake up?

"I wake up every day between 6:00 and 6:30am. Dom [Rachael's three-year-old son] is usually my human alarm, so he'll get me up. Sometimes he might sleep in until 7, which is amazing, and in that case I'll try and get up just before 6:00 and have half an hour to 45 minutes to myself กช whether that's taking [dog] Simba outside for a walk or just spending time breathing and being alone before the household starts.

"The first thing I do when I wake up is rinse my face off with ice cold water if I can, depending on winter or summer, then I will meditate for 20 minutes, then I will have a really big glass of water with fresh lemon squeezed in there. By that time, the kids have woken up and I start to get them ready."

Tea or coffee?

"I'll have a coffee about half an hour after my glass of water. It's a collagen coffee, so it's black coffee, a scoop of collagen, and a teaspoon each of maca powder and medicinal mushroom. I put all of that in a blender and it's this creamy, frothy, delicious coffee."

TV or radio, podcast or silence?

"Usually it's the kids' cartoons, to be honest, there's nothing for the adults. If if it was my choice I'd have it absolutely silent, I'd have no technology whatsoever.

"Eventually, when the kids move out of home, I'm really looking forward to that time when it's just: come downstairs, open the doors, let the fresh air in, have all of that and just conversation with Misha [Rachael's husband Michael Miziner]. Beautiful. But there'll be a bit of time before that happens!"

What do you eat for breakfast?

"I have a smoothie, it's a really simple way to get a good variety of vitamins and nutrients in for breakfast กช I will put in one or two frozen bananas, frozen blueberries, almond milk, a big handful of spinach, and I will add a scoop of vanilla protein powder, nut butter, then blend all of that together."

How long does it take you to get out the door?

"If I was given a set time, I could get out the door in 30 minutes, but if I was given a choice I'd like to get ready slowly in a two-hour period, but that includes showers, meditation, coffee, walking the dog."

Any unusual morning rituals or habits?

"Occasionally กช this might sound a bit bizarre, but it's not every morning กช I will sit in front of a Joovv light, which is an LED light therapy device. Essentially it's this big rectangular board that you plug in, and when you turn it on it emits all these powerful near, far and mid-infrared lights ... I do try and sit in front of that as often as possible, I'll do it before I've got really full-on days with work."

What's the one thing you never have time for in the morning?

"I'd probably say I never have time for the cleaning because I preference the other things I feel are more important, and then I'll leave it for when I do eventually get home and I've got time to put the toys away, wash up the dishes, put a load of washing on."

What's the one thing you always do?

"I always make sure the first thing my kids get when they wake up is a really big hug and a kiss and positive energy, just so they get to start the day like that."
