Tampon recall in US after reports of 'pieces coming off and being left in bodies'

By Maddison Leach|

A recall has been issued in the US for the U by Kotex Sleek tampon range after consumers reported that the tampons were unravelling inside them.

Consumers were reporting that the tampons were Ą°unravellingĄą and Ą°coming apart upon removalĄą according to a press release from U by KotexĄ¯s parent company Kimberly-Clark.

The release revealed that the defective tampons and the sections that were left inside the body lead to pain, bleeding, irritation and infections in some cases.

When a piece of a tampon remains inside the body itĄ¯s not just awkward ¨C it can be a real health risk.

Having even a small part of the tampon in the body for more than 12 hours can lead to yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, and in severe cases possibly even toxic shock syndrome.

While some consumers were able to remove the unravelled sections, the Kimberly-Clark press release revealed that in some cases users had to Ą°seek medical attention to remove tampon pieces left in the body.Ąą

The recall doesnĄ¯t affect Australia, as the Sleek tampon isnĄ¯t sold here and none of the Australian products have been found to have any similar issues.

But if youĄ¯ve travelled to the US recently and picked up a box of tampons you may want to double check them first.

Currently the recall is Ą°limited to specific lotsĄą of the Sleek tampons produced from October 7, 2016 to October 16, 2018.

Specific lot numbers are available on the U by Kotex website, so if youĄ¯re concerned about a box you picked up while abroad in the US you can double check there.?

As if being on your period wasnĄ¯t bad enough already!
