The unlikely toiletry that works wonders on grease-stained oven doors

By Rachael Gavin|

You've probably never thought to look in your bathroom for an oven cleaning solution, but according to one cleaning expert that's exactly where you'll find one.

Shaving cream, which some people swear by for cleaning shower glass and toilet floors, is also effective on oven doors.

Cleaning expert Kathy Cohoon, the operations manager at Two Maids?, confirmed to House Digest that shaving cream does work on the appliance because of the ingredients in it.

"?Although other specialised cleaners may work better, shaving cream is a safe, cheap, and effective way to remove gunk and grease from your oven easily," she said.

"Shaving cream effectively cleans a glass oven door due to its surfactants and foaming agents. Surfactants reduce surface tension, enabling the cream to reach and remove dirt, while foaming agents help it stick to vertical surfaces longer. Together, they break down stubborn residues, making them easy to wipe off with a damp cloth."

To use shaving cream, spray it on the inside of the oven door and spread to cover the glass?, let it sit for 20 minutes and then scrub with a cloth or sponge. Finally wipe it off with a damp cloth and leave to dry.

However, if you notice the shaving cream has a fragrance that hangs around after cleaning you might want to try this tip from Ask Team Clean before using the oven to cook again.

The toiletry has also been found to be effective on some carpet and upholstery stains, polishing stainless steel, stopping bathroom mirrors from fogging up and cleaning grout.
