Professional organiser shows how to fold a fitted sheet for three different shelf sizes

By Rachael Gavin|

F?olding fitted sheets neatly can be such a frustrating task that many of us end up scrunching them into a ball and randomly tossing into the linen cupboard.

So it's not surprising that ?professional organiser Anita Birges frequently gets asked how to fold this pesky piece of bedding,? but before she can pass on her advice she needs to know one specific detail.

That's because the method of folding a fitted sheet in the most functional way depends on what size of the shelf they'll be stored on.

?Birges demonstrated her sheet folding process for narrow, deep and shallow sized shelves in an Instagram reel.

Before you start folding the fitted sheet, she advises having a big flat area to work with "like your bed or a dining table".

To start "lay your sheet flat with the elastic side up?, bring the bottom corners up and slide them into your top corners จC you will have nice rectangular shape happening here [then] fold the long sides inwards to the middle," she said.

Once you have done those three steps you can then choose your own folding adventure based on the size of your shelf.

For deep shelves, Birges recommends folding the partially-folded sheet into thirds.

If you have a narrow shelves, fold the sheet in half.

The process is a little different for shallow shelves. In this case you should fold the short ends into the middle and then fold that together?.

Once you have your fitted sheet folded, it's likely you'll be needing to fold other items of matching bedding too.

There are a couple of hacks for keeping sheet sets together in the linen cupboard and one of them comes from home hacks queen Chantel Mila.

After folding a fitted sheet using the same process Birges demonstrated, she folds the pillowcase in half three times before folding the flat sheet.

But instead of folding it separately, she folds the flats sheet in half lengthways and then in half again.

Once she has a smaller shape she then places the matching pillowcases and fitted sheet on top, and folds the sides of the flat sheet in and the end closest to her up. Then Mila flips the bundle over and pulls the end of the sheet around to the other side to make a cushion-like parcel.

Another option for storing matching sheet sets together is to use one of the pillowcases from the set. The sheet set probably won't take up the whole of the pillowcase, so just fold that neatly under the bundle.
