Dr Justin Coulson reveals how to recognise and support kids who are being bullied

By 9Honey Parenting|

When it comes to kids and bullying, Dr Justin Coulson doesn't shy away from how difficult this can be for parents.

The parenting expert says there often isn't an easy solution to bullying, which he says goes beyond a once-off nasty comment or altercation.

"?It's the consistency and the intentionality that make it more than just being nasty that turns it into bullying," Dr Coulson told 9Honey Parenting.

Acknowledging that bullying can happen "any place where kids congregate - be it school, weekend sport or even church groups, he said kids can often keep what they're experiencing quiet.

While little kids may talk openly about the fact they are being picked on, parents of older kids should be on the lookout for signs of bullying - which can include ripped clothing, coming home hungry, bruising, school refusal, anger and irritation, among others.

But while parents may be tempted to jump into problem solving mode or to confront the bullies, Dr Coulson instead cautions a delicate approach. ?

"The main thing is to be completely available to your child, believe them, support them, promise to help intervene with the school or the sport club or church group or even the police if the bullying is serious, ongoing and previous softer approaches haven't worked."
