Six things to know about keeping guinea pigs as pets from Dr Katrina Warren

Guinea pigs, like rabbits, are often thought of as low-maintenance, easy pets for children due to their small size and cuteness.

Just like any other pet, however, guinea pigs are a big commitment, and it takes time and effort to satisfy their needs adequately and to keep them healthy and happy.?

Here are six things you should know about keeping guinea pigs as pets.

Guinea pigs can live up to 10 years

Guinea pigs are a bigger commitment than many people realise. The average lifespan of a guinea pig is five to seven years, but some do live up to 10 years. As guinea pigs are often given to children as pets, the novelty often wears off after a couple of years, leaving the guinea pig with little or no attention.?

Guinea pigs are not recommended for little children

Guinea pigs can make wonderful pets for kids over about eight years old, but they are quite fragile and can be easily dropped or injured by young children. Older children can be involved with their everyday care such as feeding and cleaning their hutch, but the responsibility will always fall with the adult. It's important to choose guinea pigs that are well-socialised and comfortable being handled. Timid guinea pigs may get stressed by children.

Guinea pigs should not be kept alone?

Guinea pigs are social animals and should live with a companion. Two male guinea pigs will often fight, so a combination of two females with one male is recommended, but it's important to de-sex the male.

Guinea pigs are susceptible to heat stroke

Care must be take to keep guinea pigs cool in summer as they are sensitive to extreme temperatures. In warmer weather, ideally their hutch should be placed indoors. Otherwise, make sure it has adequate shade all day. You can wrap a cold water bottle or ice pack in a tea towel for them to lean against and make sure they have access to fresh, cool water at all times.

Guinea pigs' teeth grow constantly?

Their teeth will continue to grow all throughout a guinea pig's life, and they need the right food to wear them down. They need lots of fresh grass and hay, as well as appropriate vegetables?and?some high-quality guinea pig?pellets to help wear the teeth. Their teeth should be checked regularly as overgrown teeth can cause a lot of pain, difficulty eating, and can result in death.

You can adopt a guinea pig

There are lots of guinea pigs needing homes! Unfortunately, they are often surrendered when children are no longer interested their pet or their owner's circumstances change. Always research local rescue groups who will be able to match you to the right guinea pigs for your circumstances. They should have an understanding of the temperament of the guinea pigs available for adoption too.
