2024 has been a year full of unforeseen challenges for the British royal family.
?In January, both King Charles and the Princess of Wales were admitted to hospital for medical procedures ¨C and in both cases, cancer was found to be present.
They respectively shared their cancer diagnoses with the public, with the news coming as a huge shock.?
With the monarch and Kate out of action as they began treatment ¨C with both returning later in the year ¨C the "slimmed-down monarchy" Charles planned for his reign unexpectedly came into action.?
Other members of The Firm have stepped up to fulfil their duties, including Princess Anne and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.
2024 has also seen a return to the royal fold for Sarah, Duchess of York ¨C who also revealed her second cancer diagnosis at the start of the year ¨C and two overseas tours for Prince Harry and Meghan, as well as an Australian tour for the King and Queen.

Prince William made a visit to BAFTA headquarters in London on October 9, attending an event co-hosted by two organisations he's affiliated with.
The Prince of Wales, who is the president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and is also royal patron of The Royal African Society, attended a gathering designed to showcase the importance of supporting young people in the film, games and television industries.
The 42-year-old had his fists up as he spoke animatedly with Bafta director of learning and new talent Tim Hunter, (centre) and actor Sheila Atim (right).
The royal, who donned a sports jacket over his shirt and tie combo, spoke to donors and beneficiaries of the Prince William BAFTA Bursary during the event.
In addition to meeting with 2024 recipients of The Prince William BAFTA Bursary fund and students from the National Film and TV School, the royal also spoke to actors Andy Serkis, Celia Imrie and Stephen Merchant.
The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh took part in a traditional toss to commemorate those killed during WWII on day two of their royal tour of Malta.
Prince Edward put a wreath into the water, while Sophie dropped a posy at the entrance to the Grand Harbour in Valetta before a gun salute sounded out from one of the high points of the city on October 8, 2024.
The couple also took a moment to view the city, where Edward's parents, Prince Philip and then-Princess Elizabeth, lived as newlyweds.
Day two of their royal tour also included unveiling a plaque in honour of the late royals at the National War Museum?.
It marked the site where the late Queen Elizabeth II "took the salute of the Mediterranean fleet before entering the harbour" in 1950, when she was the Duchess of Edinburgh, two years before she became monarch.
The pair kicked off their four-day visit on October 7, with the royal tour marking the 60th anniversary of Malta's independence.

The Duchess of Sussex delighted fans with a solo red carpet appearance in Los Angeles on October 5.
Meghan attended the Children's Hospital Los Angeles 2024 Gala ?in a striking red Caroline Herrera dress she previously wore to the Salute to Freedom gala in 2021.
Unlike the last time she wore this dress, when she went for a classic updo hairstyle, M?eghan opted for beachy waves.
Prince Harry was unable to be by her side at the gala due to a trip to South Africa.
Meghan had a sweet moment with a young attendee of the gala.?
The royal shared that she's experienced the work done by the hospital first hand, as she has close friends? with children undergoing treatment there.
"The staff is incredible, and the amount of work they do for families that really could not afford this level of care is something that I think should never be overlooked," she said.
"So I'm just grateful for everything they do. Happy to be here to support."
Meghan walked the red carpet holding hands with Alliance of Moms founder Kelly McKee Zajfen.
Inside the event she took the time ?to speak with staff from the hospital, young children and their families.
Queen Camilla made a visit to Westminster Abbey on October 3, where a medieval burial site has been uncovered during excavation work for a new room being built in honour of her husband King Charles.
The area, adjacent to the famed church, is where the Great Sacristy was built in the 1250s during Henry III's renovation of the Abbey?.
Queen Camilla was given a tour of the archaeological finds made on the site, including dozens of burials, by project architect Ptolemy Hugo Dean OBE.
Her Majesty wore a powder blue Bruce Oldfield two piece ensemble for the outing. The British designer was also behind one of the royal's most important outfits, also worn to Westminster Abbey - her coronation gown.
Among the burials unearthed, there's a remarkably well-preserved chalk-lined grave believed to belong to an 11th-centry monk.
"Amazing, it is quite remarkable ... I wouldn't like to be here at night" Her Majesty quipped, according to UK media.
Fans have been delighted by the emergence of a previously unseen photo of Prince Harry and Meghan during their trip to Jamaica in January.
In the photo, originally shared on Instagram, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex pose with ?Rastafarian musician Ricky Chaplin.
The couple were in Jamaica for the premiere of biopic Bob Marley: One Love, which Chaplin appeared in.?

The pair chatted during ?a reception to celebrate the Commonwealth Diaspora of the United Kingdom, ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Samoa.
Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh (pictured at left in the background) also joined King Charles and Queen Camilla at the event.?
The King and Queen met former Samoan rugby player Freddie Tuilagi, who got the duo moving with a dance during the reception.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla dusted off their tartan for a visit to Edinburgh to mark the 25th anniversary of the Scottish Parliament on September 28.
Camilla went for tones of blue and green for the special appearance.

King Charles looked overjoyed as he was showered in hugs by ?New Zealand's Black Ferns rugby union team at Buckingham Palace on September 11.
The monarch invited the players to the palace ahead of their match against England's Red Roses.
As Charles was speaking to the players, winger Ayesha Leti-I'iga made a cheeky request?: "We all wanted a hug but only if it's OK with you?"
"A hug? Why not?" he replied.
