Prince Frederik has visited his younger brother Prince Joachim in France, who is recovering from emergency surgery for a blood clot in the brain.

Sharing a photo of the two brothers together, the Danish Royal Household advised Princess Mary's husband had just returned home from the visit to the family's official home in France.

"HRH The Crown Prince returned home from France yesterday, where he has visited his brother, H.K.H. Prince Joachim, H.K.H. Princess Marie and the couple's two children at the Ch?teau de Cayx," the Palace said.

"Prince Joachim is still recovering well, but still needs peace around him ," they added.

The brothers, both clad in white tops, looked relaxed as they sat alfresco and appeared to be having breakfast - with toast, spreads, tea and coffee visible on the outdoor table.

The 51-year-old royal was discharged from University Hospital of Toulouse one week ago after spending ten days in hospital, including some time in ICU.

Prince Joachim had been in France since May and had been celebrating his son Prince Felix's 18th birthday just days before he underwent the emergency surgery.

Ex-wife Countess Alexandra of Frederiksborg had been a part of the celebrations of the couple's younger son, later revealing her shock at her ex-husband's health scare.

"It came as a big shock to us, as we had just finished some wonderful days together at Chateau de Cayx in connection with Prince Felix's birthday," the Countess said in a statement to Danish magazine Billed Bladet.

"Fortunately, my sons have been in constant contact with their father during the hospitalisation. The prince even called them the day after the operation, which meant an incredible amount to them.

"Today, like all the other days, I send many warm thoughts to the whole family in France."

Countess Alexandra and Prince Joachim were married just shy of ten years, from November 1995 to April 2005.

The Danish royal has since re-married, to Princess Marie in 2008, and the couple have two children.

The blended family spent time together at the chateau to celebrate Prince Felix's 18th birthday with brother Prince Nikolai, 20, and half-siblings Prince Henrik, 11, and Princess Athena, eight.

Prince Joachim was set to begin a new role as a diplomat at the Danish Embassy in Paris from September but it's unclear whether the Prince will continue with his plans or give up what's been described by Danish media as his "dream job".
