Prince Harry 'saddened' not to wear military uniform to grandmother's funeral

Prince Harry is reportedly "saddened" he won't be able to wear his military uniform as his grandmother Queen Elizabeth is laid to rest.

Only working members of the royal family will wear military attire at the funeral and the ceremonial events leading up to it.

King Charles has been seen wearing his full day ceremonial uniform with the rank of Field Marshal and Princess Anne wears her Royal Navy full ceremonial uniform in the rank of Admiral.

Prince Edward has been seen in the the Blues Uniform of the Honorary Royal Colonel of the Wessex Yeomanry.

Prince Andrew, who withdrew from royal duties after being accused of sexual assault จC accusations he has consistently denied จC has been seen wearing his morning coat and medals.?

Royal reporter Victoria Murphy told Karl Stefanovic on Today ?an exception has made for Prince Andrew to wear his military uniform during the upcoming vigil at Westminster Hall before the funeral.

"And it's caused controversy, there's been debate about it already and it's caused backlash and I'm not surprised," Murphy explained. "?Thus there's an inconsistency there with the exemption for Andrew and not for Harry and at worst I think it will cost them a lot of criticism because Andrew stepped back in disgrace.

"Harry, as well as choosing to leave, he is also the royal we think of as being associated with the military," she continued. "He did 10 years of active service?."

Harry was also unable to wear his military uniform to his grandfather's funeral in 2021, wearing a morning coat with medals attached จC one from active service in Afghanistan and one each from the Queen's Gold and Diamond jubilee celebrations.

Other family members followed suit, reportedly so Harry wasn't the only one not donning military attire.?

The last time Prince Harry was photographed in military attire was at the Mountbatten Festival of Music in 2020, just before he and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex relocated to the US.

They resided in Montecito with their children จC Archie, three, and Lilibet, one.

Harry was stripped of three honorary military titles when he resigned from the monarchy จC Captain General of the Royal Marines, Honourary Air Commandant of RAF Honington and Commodore-In-Chief of Small Ships and Diving.?

At the time of the couple's resignation, Buckingham Palace released the following statement.?

"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed to Her Majesty The Queen that they will not be returning as working members of the royal family," it read. "Following conversations with The Duke [of Edinburgh], The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of the royal family, it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service.

"The honorary military appointments and royal patronages held by the Duke and Duchess [of Sussex] will therefore be returned to Her Majesty, before being redistributed among working members of the royal family."

Prince Harry and Meghan were in the UK for a number of engagements when Queen Elizabeth died on September 8.

It has been confirmed the pair will remain in the UK for the duration of the royal family's official period of mourning which extends seven days after Her Majesty is laid to rest. There has been speculation they may fly their children over to the UK to join them.

Queen's coffin will arrive at Edinburgh Airport on Tuesday September 13 and will be flown to London.

Princess Anne will be onboard and by her late mother's side for the journey to the capital city.

The coffin is scheduled to arrive at Buckingham Palace at 19.00 (5am AEST) and its arrival will be observed by King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla.

Her Majesty's coffin will then be placed in the Bow Room in Buckingham Palace.

On Wednesday, September 16, the coffin will be carried in a gun carriage procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall at the Palace of Westminster.

On foot, King Charles will lead members of the royal family walking behind the procession.
