Mum kicks out house guest for screaming at daughter: 'Out of line'

By Madhurima Haque|

Parents are often protective of their kids, but one mum is questioning whether she went too far kicking out her house guest after her she yelled at her daughter.

Sharing her story on Reddit, the mum explained that her long-time friend, Mary, who lives in the city, had come to visit and stay at their large property in the country.

"Things went great for the most part until she woke up early one morning. This is where the problem started," wrote the mum.

Her nine-year-old daughter, Lori, has recently taken to sitting on the porch every morning with a cup of tea and a book, usually waking up an hour before everyone else.

"Now, I don't mind this," said the mum, "She never leaves the porch and I have a ring camera so we had a discussion on rules around it and as long as she continues as she has, her dad and I don't mind. Our home is not close to a road so we feel it's safe."

However, one morning the mum "woke up to screaming". She rushed outside to see Mary yelling at Lori.

"When I got to the porch, Lori was in tears and Mary asked me if I knew Lori was outside when no one was awake. I told her yes and sorry for forgetting to tell her about this. I told her it's ok and Lori does this every morning and we are ok with it," explained the mum.

"Mary yelled that this was abuse as Lori was way too young to be outside without supervision. I informed her I had a camera and Lori was perfectly safe. She continued to lay into me about it until I told her I think it'd be best if she left. She packed up and left within the hour.

"My husband thinks I'm in the wrong for kicking Mary out when she was just concerned for Lori and that Mary was from the city where it isn't safe to allow something like this. I think I could be in the wrong for not explaining our mornings but I don't think I'm wrong for allowing Lori her quiet mornings on the porch."

People on the forum assured the mum that she made the right decision.

"Even if your daughter was doing something wrong, she should never have screamed at her. That's enough to kick her out alone," said one commenter.

"Mary's reaction is so completely bizarre that I wonder if she has some past trauma. That being said, obviously it was best that she leave," noted another.

"Your 'city' friend brought her 'city' insecurities with her to the blessedly calm country," declared another. "Her going off on your daughter was way out of line. I would have sent her packing out the door as well. You are a great mum."

"If Mary were truly concerned, she should have been the adult to supervise Lori until you woke up. Then she could have asked you about the house rule. Screaming at your child was not ok," said another.

"She was bullying your child to the point of tears. She was entitled to her concerns, although they should have been ended when you explained, instead of her doubling down and telling you you're a bad parent, but those concerns should have been taken to you not your child and it should have been done in a calm manner not by screaming at anyone," one explained.
