Princess Mary's brother-in-law, Prince Joachim of Denmark, has started his new role at the Danish Embassy in Paris.

It comes less than two months after the younger brother of Crown Prince Frederick underwent emergency brain surgery.

As he arrived for his first day of work on Friday, the 51-year-old said he was "eager to get started".

The prince was due to have started his new role on September 1 but it was postponed because of his condition.

Joachim and his French-born wife, Princess Marie, were residing at the family's private summer residence of Chateau de Cayx in southwestern France when he got the blood clot.

Doctors assessed that the risk of recurrence was "very small."

Joachim is sixth in line to Denmark's throne after his elder brother, Crown Prince Frederik, and his brother's four children.
