Pregnant woman refuses mother-in-law's 'creepy' request

By Georgia Weir|

Being first-time grandparents can be almost as exciting as first-time parents. Grandparents may wish to be involved in ultrasounds, doctor visits and other baby-related activities. But when does involvement become overinvolvement?

One pregnant woman has found herself at odds with her boyfriend's parents after refusing a strange request from her mother-in-law.

"I am currently 31 weeks pregnant. I have a daughter from a previous relationship. This will be my mother-in-law's first grandchild. I understand that this is a big event for her and I do my best to tell her how everything goes when I talk to her," the woman posted on Reddit.

The mum-to-be says that due to the pandemic and distance she has only met the parents of her boyfriend a handful of times.

"She (my mother-in-law) called me yesterday and asked for a picture of my belly. I'm not too comfortable with my body because of my past and hate taking pictures, but tried to suggest that I would take a look in my closet if I had any clothes that would fit and look OK in a picture," the poster lamented.

"Her answer was that she just wanted a picture of my belly. That sounded like a weird request to me. So my next suggestion was that we could come visit so she could see how I look now. But she still wanted the picture so she had something to look at.

"When she said that, it just felt so creepy and made me really uncomfortable."

The anonymous mum said she was "not at all comfortable with the thought of giving away pictures of my belly. My boyfriend doesn't think it's a big deal since I am pregnant, but for me it doesn't matter if I'm pregnant or not, it's still my body."

Redditors agreed that this was a strange request and that the mum-to-be was not in the wrong for refusing to send a picture of her belly.

"She's really objectifying you," one user said bluntly.

Other users were also confused by the mother-in-law's request for a picture of only the belly.

"It would be different if she was asking for a picture of you, as in the whole of you, whilst pregnant. Asking for a picture of just your pregnant belly is weird. It is your body and you do not have to do it," another user said.
