Prince Harry speaks about visiting King Charles and how the illness could reunify royal family

Prince Harry has spoken for the first time about King Charles's cancer diagnosis.

The Duke of Sussex also touched on his quick visit to London and? how he believes his father's illness could unify the family during the chat that aired on Good Morning America on Friday morning (about 11.30pm AEDT).

"I love my family," Harry said when asked by Will Reeve about travelling to London hours after the news of his father's cancer broke.

"The fact that I was able to get on a plane and go and see him and spend any time with him, I'm grateful for that."

While he wouldn't open up about his personal thoughts on his father's diagnosis, saying "that stays between me and him", Harry did confirm he was told the news during a phone call with the monarch.?

The TV interview took place while Prince Harry and Meghan were in Whistler, Canada for the One Year To Go Invictus Games? event.

The Duke of Sussex remained optimistic that the deep rift within the family could still be healed - something many thought impossible after his bombshell-filled memoir, Spare.?

"An illness in the family can have a galvanising or sort of a reunifying effect for families. Is that possible in this case?" Reeve asked.

"Yeah, I'm sure," Harry replied without missing a beat.

"From all of these families, I see it on a day-to-day basis ... the strength of the family unit coming together,?" he added, referring to Invictus Games competitors who are injured members of the armed services.

Harry said while his family in California remains his priority, he hinted that he will be making more trips to the UK shortly.

"I have my own family ... my life in California is as it is, now," he said when asked how he feels being so far away from the King by living in the US.

"I've got other trips planned that would take me through the UK or back to the UK.

"So, you know, I'll stop in and see my family as much as I can."

?Prince Harry also spoke about his two kids with Meghan - Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet - who recently officially took on the family's Sussex surname.

"The kids are doing great," Harry told Reeve.

"The kids are growing up like all kids do very, very fast. They've both got an incredible sense of humour and make us laugh and keep us grounded every single day, like most kids do.

"I'm just very grateful to be a dad."
